al-Khayr—one of the younger Companions.
When the Prophet ﷺ passed away, Wahb was on the threshold of adolescence—roughly the same age as Ibn ʿAbbās—and he was the commander of ʿAlī’s police guard.
He transmitted hadith from the Prophet ﷺ, as well as from ʿAlī and al-Barāʾ.
Among those who narrated from him are ʿAlī ibn al-Aqmar, al-Hakam ibn ʿUtaybah, Salamah ibn Kuhayl, his son ʿAwn ibn Abī Juḥayfah, Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, and many others.
It is reported that whenever ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah be pleased with him—stood to preach, Abū Juḥayfah would stand beneath his pulpit.
Scholars disagreed about the year of his death, but the soundest view is that he died in 74 AH; some say he lived beyond eighty years of age—Allah knows best.
His narrations are found in the Six Books, and the last person to relate from him was Ibn Abī Khālid.

“…nothing could be compared to him. I asked Abu Juhayfa: ‘Describe him to me.’ He replied: ‘He had a fair complexion and his hair had begun to show some grey. The Prophet ﷺ allotted us thirteen qulus (young female camels), but he passed away before we could take delivery of them.’
His remark ‘shamt’ means that the black of his hair had become intermixed with white. The next report specifies that the grey hairs were in the ‘unfuqa, the small patch between the chin and the lower lip. A qulus is the female of the camel.
(1) The printed edition mistakenly reads ‘Riyah’; the correct form is ‘Rabah’. Likewise ‘Qurt’ should read ‘Qaraz’.
