Her narrations are recorded in all six canonical collections.
Al-Wāqidī said: “ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar—and another narrator—told us, from Abū ʿUbaydah ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAmmār, from al-Rubayyiʿ, who said:
‘I once took some perfume from Asmāʾ bint Mukharaba (1), the mother of Abū Jahl. She said, ‘Write me an acknowledgment.’ I replied, ‘Certainly, I will write: al-Rubayyiʿ bint Muʿawwidh.’ She retorted, ‘Halqā! (2) You are the daughter of the man who killed her master.’ I answered, ‘Rather, I am the daughter of the man who killed her slave.’ She declared, ‘By Allah, I will never sell you anything again.’ (3)”
Al-Rubayyiʿ was the mother of Muḥammad ibn Iyās ibn al-Bukayr. (4)
Ḥammād ibn Salamah reported—from Khālid ibn Dhakwān—who said:
‘We entered to visit al-Rubayyiʿ bint Muʿawwidh, and she said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to me on the morning of my wedding. He sat right here on my bedding while two young girls of ours were beating a hand-drum and chanting elegies for my forefathers who were slain at Badr. Among the lines they sang were:
‘With us is a Prophet who knows what tomorrow brings …’
He said, ‘As for that line, do not say it.’” (5)
(1) In the printed edition the name is mistakenly given as “Makhrama.”
(2) halqa: an imprecation that she be struck with a throat affliction. When a woman is considered troublesome or ill-omened one says: ‘aqra halqa.
(3) Cited by Ibn Hajar in Al-Isaba, 4/232, under the entry of Asma bint Mukhariyya, through the isnad of al-Waqidi; see also Ibn Saʿd, Al-Tabaqat, 4/129 and 5/443-444.
(4) Ibn Saʿd, 8/447.
(5) The chain of transmission is sound. Ibn Saʿd, 8/447, records it via Musa b. Ismail with this same isnad, and al-Bukhari, 9/174 (Book of Marriage, chapter: Beating the tambourine at weddings and wedding banquets) records it through Musaddad → Bishr b. al-Mufaddal → Khalid b. Dhikwan → al-Rabiʿ. The Prophet ﷺ rebuked her only for attributing to him ‘ilm al-ghayb (knowledge of the unseen), for such knowledge belongs exclusively to Allah, as He says: “Qul la yaʿlamu man fi al-samawati wa-l-ardi al-ghayba illa Allah” (Say: None in the heavens or the earth knows the unseen save Allah, Qur’an 27:65). He also says to His Prophet ﷺ: “Qul la amliku linafsi nafʿan wa la darran illa ma shaʾa Allah” (Say: I do not possess for myself benefit or harm except what Allah wills, Qur’an 7:188).
