ʿAbd Allah ibn Unays.
Sulaymān ibn Dāwūd al-Minqarī reported: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar informed us, saying that Khārija ibn al-Ḥārith narrated:
“Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah died in the year 78 AH at the age of ninety-four. He had already lost his sight. I observed a striped cloak laid upon his bier, and Abān ibn ʿUthmān—the governor of Medina—led the funeral prayer over him (1).”
It is also related from Jābir that he said, “I was with Khālid’s army during the siege of Damascus.”
Ibn Saʿd added: “Jābir attended the Pledge of ʿAqaba with the seventy and was the youngest among them.”
Jābir further narrated: “On the day of al-Ḥudaybiya the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us, ‘Today you are the best people on earth.’ We were one thousand four hundred in number (2).”
He likewise said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ visited me when I was unconscious; he performed ablution and poured over me some of the water of his ablution—"
He heard Jabir ibn Abd Allah say: “News reached me that a man possessed a hadith he had heard from the Messenger of Allah, so I bought a camel, packed my saddle on it, and travelled for a month until I reached him in Syria. I found that the man was Abd Allah ibn Unays. I said to the gate-keeper: ‘Tell him: Jabir is at the door.’ He asked, ‘The son of Abd Allah?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ He came out, his garment trailing, embraced me and I embraced him. I said, ‘A hadith about qisas (retaliatory justice) has reached me that you heard from the Messenger of Allah. I feared you might die or I might die before I could hear it.’ He said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah say: “People—or he said: the servants—will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection naked, uncircumcised, and buhama (completely empty-handed).” We asked, “What is buhama?” He answered, “They will possess nothing.” Then He will call them in a voice that is heard by those far away just as clearly as by those who are near: “I am the King, I am the Judge. No one destined for Hellfire may enter it while he still has a claim over someone destined for Paradise, until I have taken it from him, even down to a slap.” We said, “How will that happen when we shall come to Allah naked, uncircumcised, and empty-handed?” He replied, “By means of good deeds and bad deeds.”
Ibn Hajar graded the hadith hasan in Fath al-Bari, 1/158. Al-Hakim declared it sahih (2/437-438) and al-Dhahabi concurred. It has another chain in al-Tabarani’s Musnad al-Shamiyyin through al-Hajjaj ibn Dinar—from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir—from Jabir with a similar wording, and a third chain in al-Khatib, no. 33, but that version is defective.
(1) Recorded in al-Mustadrak, 3/565, and by al-Tabarani (no. 1733) through Muhammad ibn Umar (al-Waqidi).
(2) Reported by al-Bukhari, 7/341 (Book of Maghazi), and by Muslim, 1856 (71), through Sufyan from Amr, who said: “I heard Jabir ibn Abd Allah,” and he related the story.
