A similar account was transmitted by Hammad ibn Salama, from ʿAlī ibn Judʿān, from Aws ibn Khālid, who said:
“Whenever I visited Abū Maḥdhūra he would ask me about Samura, and whenever I went to Samura he would ask me about Abū Maḥdhūra. I finally asked Abū Maḥdhūra about this, and he replied, ‘Samura, Abū Hurayra, and I were once together in a house when the Prophet ﷺ entered and said, “The last of you to die will be in the Fire.” Abū Hurayra died, and then Abū Maḥdhūra.’ (1)
Maʿmar related—from Ibn Ṭāwūs and others—that the Prophet ﷺ said to Abū Hurayra, Samura ibn Jundub, and another man, “The last of you to die will be in the Fire.” The unnamed man died before the other two. Whenever anyone wanted to provoke Abū Hurayra he would say, “Samura has died.” Abū Hurayra would lose consciousness and collapse, and he himself died before Samura.
Samura killed a great many people.
Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb reported: ʿĀmir ibn Abī ʿĀmir told us,
“We were in the gathering of Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd when someone remarked, ‘There is no spot on earth that has soaked up more blood than this one’—meaning the governor’s residence—for seventy thousand people were killed there.’ I asked Yūnus about it and he said, ‘Yes—some were slain outright and others had their limbs cut off.’ It was asked, ‘Who did that?’ He replied, ‘Ziyād, his son, and Samura.’”
Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said, “We nonetheless hope for him on account of his Companionship.”
Ibn Sīrīn said, “Samura was extremely trustworthy and truthful.”
Hilāl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ narrated: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muʿāwiya told us, from a man who said that Samura was perfuming himself with incense, became inattentive, and was burned. (2)
