Al-Bakkāʾī relates from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: Nāfiʿ narrated to me from Ibn ʿUmar:
When ʿUmar accepted Islam he asked, “Which man of Quraysh is the swiftest at spreading news?” They replied, “Jamīl ibn Maʿmar al-Jumaḥī.” Early the next morning he went straight to him, and I—while still a perceptive boy—followed in his footsteps. When he reached Jamīl he said, “Do you know that I have embraced Islam?” By Allah, Jamīl did not even answer him; instead he rose, dragging his cloak, went to the door of the mosque, and shouted at the top of his voice, “People of Quraysh, the son of al-Khaṭṭāb has abandoned the faith!” ʿUmar, walking behind him, kept saying, “He lies; rather, I have submitted to Allah.”
They surged against ʿUmar, and he continued fighting them while they fought him until the sun stood high above their heads. At last he grew exhausted and sat down, while they stood over him and he said, “Do whatever you please. I swear by Allah, had we been 300 men, you would either have left it to us or we to you.”
While this was going on, an elderly man approached wearing a striped mantle and an embroidered shirt. He stopped and asked, “What is the matter with you?” They replied, “ʿUmar has renounced his religion.” He said, “So what! A man has chosen a path for himself—what do you want from him? Do you imagine that the descendants of Kaʿb ibn ʿAdī will hand him over? Let him be.” By Allah, it was as though they were a cloak that had been lifted off him.
After the Emigration I asked my father, “Father, who was the man who drove the people away from you?” He said, “Al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil.”
Ibn Ḥibbān recorded this report through the chain of Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim from Ibn Isḥāq.
Isḥāq ibn Ibrāhīm al-Ḥanīnī also narrated from Usāmah ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: ʿUmar told us, “I was the harshest of people toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. One sweltering midday as I walked along a road in Mecca, a man met me and said, ‘How strange, O son of al-Khaṭṭāb! You claim such-and-such, yet the matter has reached your own household.’ I asked, ‘What do you mean?’ He replied, ‘Your sister has embraced Islam.’ So I turned back…"
