33 – ʿAmr ibn Umayya ibn Khuwailid ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Ḍamri * (ʿ)
Ibn Iyas, also known as Abū Umayya al-Damri, was a Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Harun al-Hammal said: “He stood with the idolaters at Badr and at Uhud.”
I add: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ later sent him out on a one-man expedition (1), dispatched him as an envoy to the Negus (2), and he joined the Prophet ﷺ on other campaigns, from which he transmitted hadiths.
Those who related from him include his two sons, Jaʿfar and ʿAbd Allah, as well as his nephew al-Zibraqān ibn ʿAbd Allah.
Al-Zuhri reported—through Jaʿfar ibn ʿAmr ibn Umayya, from his father—that “the Prophet ﷺ ate from a shoulder joint that was being carved, then prayed without performing ablution” (3).
Ibn Saʿd said: “He embraced Islam when the idolaters withdrew from Uhud, and he was—”
= “Al-Alqab”: all the narrations in that section go back exclusively to Ya‘la ibn al-Ashdaq.
Al-Bukhari said about him, “His hadith is not to be recorded.” Ibn Hibban wrote, “Fabricated reports were foisted on him and he transmitted them without realizing it.” Abu Zur‘a remarked, “He is worthless; not reliable.”
I add: the cited verses belong to a long qasidah; see his collected poetry for the full text.
