to the Bāb al-Ṣaghīr Gate. There he dismounted, and al-Ḍaḥḥāk al-Fihri walked ahead of him until they reached Muʿāwiyah’s grave. We formed ranks behind him and he pronounced the takbīr four times. He then mounted his mule and rode on to al-Khaḍrāʾ (1).
When the time for the noon prayer arrived, a herald announced: “The prayer is gathering.” So he performed a full ritual bath, came out, sat on the pulpit, ordered the stipends to be paid without delay, and excused them from naval expeditions. The people dispersed, and none of them preferred anyone over him (2).
Al-Layth, Abū Maʿshar, and several others state that Muʿāwiyah died in Rajab of the year 60 AH. It is said that it was mid-Rajab; others say eight days before the month’s end. He lived seventy-seven years.
His hadiths in the Musnad of Baqī number one hundred and sixty-three. Al-Ahwāzī compiled his Musnad in a single volume. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both transmit four of his hadiths; in addition, al-Bukhārī alone relates four, and Muslim five (3).
