Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

“I used to prepare water for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to perform his ablution. One day he removed his shirt and put it on me. I kept that shirt and I also saved some clippings from his nails. When I die, dress me in that shirt next to my skin, and grind the nail-clippings and place the powder in my eyes; perhaps Allah will show me mercy through their blessing.” (1)

Humayd ibn Hilāl narrates, from Abū Burdah, who said:
“I visited Muʿāwiyah when the ulcer had struck him. He said, ‘Come here, nephew, and look.’ I looked, and it had already spread.” (2)

Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ said: When Muʿāwiyah was at the point of death, he was asked, “Will you not leave a bequest?”
He replied, “O Allah, lift the stumble, pardon the slip, and—by Your forbearance—overlook the ignorance of one who hopes for none but You, for beyond You there is no refuge.”

Then he recited:
“It is death—there is no escape from death, and what we fear after death is even worse and more horrific.”

Abū Mushir said: Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Qays al-Fihrī led the funeral prayer over Muʿāwiyah, and—so I have been informed—he was buried between Bab al-Jābiyah and Bab al-Ṣaghīr. (3)

Abū ʿUbaydah relates, from Abū Yaʿqūb al-Thaqafī, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, who said:
When Muʿāwiyah’s illness became severe he said, “Fill my eyes with ithmid (antimony) and soak my head with oil.” They did so, making his face gleam with the oil. Then they spread a cushion for him, seated him, and propped him up.

He then said, “Let the people come close and greet me while standing.” So a man would come in and remark, “They say he is in dire straits, yet he is the healthiest of men!”

When they had left, Muʿāwiyah said:
