asking him, whereupon he gave each of them one hundred thousand. News of this reached ʿAlī, who said to them, “Are you not ashamed? A man whose faults we denounce morning and evening, yet you go to him for money?!”
They replied, “Because you withheld from us, while he was generous to us.” ⦗1⦘
Abū Hilāl relayed from Qatādah:
Muʿāwiyah said, “How astonishing of al-Ḥasan! He drank a draught of honey mixed with the water of Ruma and then met his appointed end.”
He next said to Ibn ʿAbbās, “May Allah neither trouble nor grieve you over al-Ḥasan.”
Ibn ʿAbbās replied, “So long as Allah leaves the Commander of the Believers to me, Allah will never distress or sadden me.”
Muʿāwiyah thereupon gave him one million, partly in goods and partly in cash,
and said, “Distribute it among your family.” ⦗2⦘
Al-ʿUtbi narrated:
Someone said to Muʿāwiyah, “Gray hair has come upon you quickly.”
He answered, “How could it not, when there is always some Arab standing over my head composing words that compel me to answer? If I answer well, I gain no praise; if I slip, the couriers spread it far and wide.” ⦗3⦘
Mālik said that Muʿāwiyah remarked, “For a time I plucked out the gray hairs.”
He would go out to his place of prayer, and his cloak had to be carried for him because of old age.
A man once entered to find him weeping and asked, “What makes you weep?”
He replied, “This is what you all used to wish for me.”
Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Yazīd ⦗4⦘ transmitted—through Mujālid, from al-Shaʿbī—who said:
When facial paralysis ⦗5⦘ struck Muʿāwiyah, he wept. Marwān asked, “What makes you weep?”
He answered, “I have returned to what I once avoided: my years have grown many, my bones fragile, and my tears abundant.”
