The Conversion of ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him):
ʿAbd ibn Ḥumayd and others relate: Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī told us, “Khārijah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, strengthen Islam with the one You love more out of these two men—ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb or Abū Jahl ibn Hishām.’” A similar report is transmitted by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār from Ibn ʿUmar.
Mubārak ibn Faḍālah narrated from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that the Prophet ﷺ prayed: “O Allah, strengthen the religion through ʿUmar.”
ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Awīsī reported: al-Mājishūn ibn Abī Salamah related to us, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “O Allah, strengthen Islam specifically through ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb.”
Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid said: Qays narrated to us that Ibn Masʿūd declared, “From the moment ʿUmar accepted Islam, we have enjoyed honor and strength.” Al-Bukhārī recorded this.
Aḥmad, in his Musnad, reports: Abū al-Mughīrah told us; Ṣafwān told us; Shurayḥ ibn ʿUbayd told us that ʿUmar said:
“I went out looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to confront him, but found that he had reached the mosque before me. I stood behind him, and he opened his recitation with Sūrah al-Ḥāqqah. I was amazed at the composition of the Quran and said to myself, ‘By Allah, this is poetry, just as Quraysh alleges.’ Then he recited: ‘Indeed, it is the speech of a noble messenger; and it is not the speech of a poet—little is it that…’”
