Likewise, there is the report transmitted from ʿUthmān, traced back to the Prophet: “Congratulations, Muʿāwiyah! You have this morning become the custodian of the tidings of heaven.”
Abū Mūsā relates: Revelation descended upon the Prophet; when the state of awe had passed, he sent for Muʿāwiyah. After Muʿāwiyah had written it down—namely, Āyat al-Kursī (the Throne Verse)—the Prophet said, “May Allah forgive you, Muʿāwiyah, for all that has gone before until the Day of Resurrection.”
Murri al-Ḥawrānī reports, on the authority of an unnamed man: Gabriel came down and said, “O Muhammad, you have no right to dismiss the one whom Allah has chosen to write His revelation. Keep him on, for he is trustworthy.”
From Saʿd, traced back to the Prophet: “Muʿāwiyah will be raised on the Day of Resurrection wearing a robe of light.”
Anas relates: Gabriel descended with a pen of gold and said, “O Muhammad, the Most High declares: ‘I have presented this pen from above My Throne to Muʿāwiyah. Instruct him to write Āyat al-Kursī with it, to add the vowel marks and the diacritical dots…,’ after which he recounted a long story.”
Ibn ʿAbbās says: When Āyat al-Kursī was revealed, the Prophet summoned Muʿāwiyah, but no pen could be found, for Allah had ordered Gabriel to remove the pens from his inkwell. Muʿāwiyah rose to fetch one, whereupon the Prophet ﷺ said, “Take the pen from your ear!”—and there it was, a pen of gold inscribed with “There is no god but Allah,” a gift from Allah to His trustee Muʿāwiyah.
From ʿĀʾishah, traced back to the Prophet: “It is as though I can see Muʿāwiyah’s two slender shins adorned and strolling in Paradise.”
ʿAlī said: “I shall certainly discharge whatever duty I owe to Muʿāwiyah, for the Prophet of Allah employed him as a scribe while I was sitting there. I realized that this was not simply the Messenger’s choice but a decision from Allah.”
Jābir transmits, traced back to the Prophet: “The trustees in Allah’s sight are seven: the Pen, Gabriel, myself, Muʿāwiyah, the Tablet, Isrāfīl, and Mīkāʾīl.”
Zayd ibn Thābit relates: The Prophet ﷺ entered upon Umm Ḥabībah, and Muʿāwiyah
