Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Muḥammad ibn Shuʿayb said: Marwān ibn Janāḥ narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Maysarah:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked Abū Bakr and ʿUmar for their view on a certain matter. They answered, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He then said, ‘Advise me.’ Next he said, ‘Summon Muʿāwiyah.’ He added, ‘Let him attend your affairs and witness your decisions, for he is strong and trustworthy.’ (1)

Nuʿaym ibn Ḥammād also transmitted it from Ibn Shuʿayb, extending the chain to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Busr.

Abū Mushir and Ibn ʿĀʾidh reported—from Ṣadaqah ibn Khālid, from Wahshī ibn Ḥarb ibn Wahshī, from his father, from his grandfather—who said:

“The Prophet ﷺ seated Muʿāwiyah behind him and asked, ‘What part of you is touching me?’ He replied, ‘My stomach, O Messenger of Allah.’ The Prophet prayed, ‘O Allah, fill him with knowledge.’ (2) Abū Mushir added, ‘and with forbearance.’

Ṣāliḥ Jazara remarked: ‘One should not busy himself with (the narrations of) Wahshī or his father.’

Baqiyyah related—from Baḥīr ibn Saʿd, from Khālid ibn Maʿdān, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was traveling with a group. They spoke about Syria, and someone said, ‘How can we cope with Syria when the Byzantines are there?’ Muʿāwiyah was among them, holding a staff. The Prophet struck Muʿāwiyah’s shoulder with the staff and said, ‘Allah will suffice you through this man.’ (3)

This is a mursal report, yet reliable. (4)

These ḥadiths are close in meaning. (5)

In his biography, however, Ibn ʿAsākir cited many weak and spurious traditions and was exceedingly lengthy in doing so. (6)

(4) The chain cannot be deemed strong, for it includes the mudallis Baqiyyah. (5) In the printed edition the name has been mistakenly altered to “Muawiyah.” (6) See Ibn Asakir, Tarikh Dimashq, vol. 16, pp. 345, 350.
