Al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī, Khalīfa, and others report that Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim died in 59 AH, while al-Madāʾinī dates his death to 58 AH.
19 – ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib al-Hāshimī* (S, Q)
A cousin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, known by the kunyahs Abu Yazīd and Abu ʿĪsā.
I have already referred to him: he was twenty years older than his brother ʿAlī and ten years older than his brother Jaʿfar al-Ṭayyār.
He emigrated during the truce, was present at the expedition of Muʾta, and a collection of (1) hadiths is attributed to him.
Those who narrated from him include: his son Muḥammad; his grandson ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl; Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥa; ʿAṭāʾ; al-Ḥasan; and Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān.
He outlived his brother, Imam ʿAlī. Afterwards he visited Muʿāwiya. Cheerful and fond of banter, he was an expert in genealogy and in the annals of the Arabs.
He was compelled to join his people at Badr, where he was taken prisoner; having no wealth, he was ransomed by his uncle al-ʿAbbās.
He suffered an illness for a time, and after Muʾta we hear nothing of him in the subsequent campaigns. At Khaybar the Prophet ﷺ allotted him a yearly stipend of one hundred and forty wasqs of produce.
