ʿAbd Allah ibn Babah, Yahya ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Hatib, and Ibrahim ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAwf; and he paid a formal visit to Muʿawiyah during the latter’s rule.
Ibn Wahb relates: Usama ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, that Muhammad ibn Jubayr informed him—on the authority of his father—that he had come to arrange the ransom of the captives taken at Badr. He said, “I reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was reciting in the Maghrib prayer, ‘By the Mount, and a Book inscribed’ (al-Tur 52:1-2), and his recitation overwhelmed me with a crushing anxiety (1).”
Ibn Lahiʿah reports, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, from ʿAmir ibn Yahya, from ʿAli ibn Rabah, from Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim, who said:
“I disliked the harm Quraysh were inflicting upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When we feared they might kill him, I withdrew to one of the monasteries. The monks went to their superior and told him, so I met with him and recounted my situation. He asked, ‘Do you fear they will kill him?’
‘I do,’ I replied.
He said, ‘And would you recognize his likeness were you to see it depicted?’
‘Yes,’ I answered.
So he showed me an image, covered, that looked exactly like him, and said, ‘By Allah, they will never kill him, and we shall assuredly kill anyone who seeks to kill him, for indeed he…’
(1) The chain of transmission is hasan (sound). Umama b. Zayd is al-Laythi; Ibn Hajar states in al-Taqrib that he is “truthful but prone to error.” Al-Tabarani also records the report (no. 1498) through Ahmad b. Salih from Ibn Wahb with the same isnad. The hadith is likewise transmitted by al-Bukhari 2/206 (Book of Prayer), Muslim (no. 463), Malik 1/99, Abu Dawud (811), Ibn Majah (832), al-Nasa’i 2/169, al-Tabarani (1491) and Abd al-Razzaq (2692), all via al-Zuhri → Muhammad b. Jubayr b. Mutim → his father, who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah recite Surah al-Tur during the Maghrib prayer.”
Al-Bukhari 6/116 (Book of Jihad) adds that Jubayr had come concerning the prisoners of Badr. The narration also appears in al-Humaydi (556) and, through him, in al-Bukhari 8/463 (Book of Tafsir) from Sufyan, who said: “They related to me from al-Zuhri → Muhammad b. Jubayr b. Mutim → his father: ‘I heard the Prophet recite Surah al-Tur in the Maghrib prayer; when he reached the verses, “Were they created from nothing, or are they the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain. Or do they possess the treasuries of your Lord, or are they the controllers?” my heart almost leapt from my chest.’” Sufyan then remarked, “For my part I only heard al-Zuhri narrate, ‘I heard the Prophet recite Surah al-Tur in the Maghrib prayer’; I did not hear the additional wording they reported to me.”
