Muslim al-Zinji reported—on the authority of Ibn Khuthaym, from ʿUbayd ibn Saʿīd—that he once entered the Sacred Mosque with ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr while the Kaʿbah was still smoldering, just after the army of Ḥuṣayn ibn Numayr had withdrawn. Its stones were tumbling down. ʿAbd Allah halted, burst into tears, and I could see the tears streaming down his cheeks. Then he proclaimed:
“O people! By Allah, had Abū Hurayrah told you that you would slay the son of your Prophet and set fire (1) to the House of your Lord, you would have said, ‘No one is a greater liar than Abū Hurayrah!’ Yet you have done exactly that. So await the vengeance of Allah: He will surely cause you to break into factions and will make some of you taste the violence of others.”
Shuʿbah narrated—from Yaʿlā ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from his mother—that she used to prepare kohl for ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr. He wept frequently, closing his door upon himself and crying until his eyes became inflamed.
Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said: “ʿAbd Allah died during the Nights of al-Ḥarrah (2), in the year 63 AH.”
Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr said: “ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr passed away in Egypt and was buried in his small residence in the year 65 AH.”
The same year of death was likewise recorded by Khalīfah, Abū ʿUbayd, al-Wāqidī, al-Fallās, and others (3).
Khalīfah also said: “He died in al-Ṭāʾif; it is also said: in Mecca.”
Ibn al-Barqī Abū Bakr added: “As for his children, they maintain that he died in Greater Syria.”
