Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

concerning the laws of blood-money, the prescribed shares of zakat, and other such rulings (1).

Ibn Isḥāq narrates—from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather—who said:
“I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall I write down everything I hear from you?’
He replied, ‘Yes.’
I said, ‘Whether you are in a state of satisfaction or anger?’
He said, ‘Yes, for I speak nothing but the truth (2).’”

Yahyā ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān also transmitted this report; it is recorded in the Musnad through his chain, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn

= Muslim (no. 1978/45) transmits—through Abu al-Tufayl from Ali—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not single us out with anything that was not conveyed to all people, except what is kept in the sheath of this sword of mine. He then produced a scroll on which was written: “May Allah curse anyone who sacrifices to other than Allah; may Allah curse anyone who steals the land-boundary markers; may Allah curse anyone who curses his parents; and may Allah curse anyone who shelters an innovator.” Al-Nasai (8/24), by way of al-Ashtar and others from Ali, adds that the scroll also said: “The blood-money of the believers is mutually equivalent; the least of them may grant protection on their behalf; no believer is killed in retaliation for a disbeliever, and no treaty holder is harmed while his covenant endures.” Ibn Hajar judges its chain sound (Fath al-bari 12/231). Ahmad (1/100, 102, 110), through Tariq ibn Shihab, reports that the document furthermore contained “the prescribed rates of zakat.” Muslim (no. 1370) records that it listed “the age-categories of camels and certain rulings on wounds.” Ibn Hajar comments (Fath al-bari 1/182): “All these reports refer to a single document; everything mentioned was written in it, and each narrator quoted the part he remembered.” The hadith of Abu Shah is found in al-Bukhari (1/183-184) in the Book of Knowledge, in the Book of Lost-and-Found (chapter: How to identify what is lost in Mecca), and in the Book of Blood-Money (chapter: Whoever has a slain relative is entitled to the better of the two options); in Muslim (no. 1355) in the Book of Hajj (chapter: The sanctity of Mecca); in Ahmad (no. 7241); in Abu Dawud (2017); and in al-Ramhurmuzi’s al-Muhaddith al-fasl (no. 314) ‑- all on the authority of Abu Hurayrah. Al-Walid ibn Muslim said: “I asked al-Awzai, ‘What is meant by the Prophet’s words, “Write it for Abu Shah”?’ He replied, ‘It refers to the sermon which Abu Shah heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’” Abu Shah was a man from Yemen. The report is further cited in al-Ilma, p. 146; Taqyid al-ilm, p. 74; and Jami bayān al-ilm, pp. 89-90.
