Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

is Ibn Salām.

It was also said that the Prophet’s permission for him to “stand with it” simply meant that he could review what he already knew of it, not that he should recite it during his late-night vigil.

Kāmil ibn Ṭalḥah said: Ibn Lahiʿah narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn ʿAmr, from Shufay, from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, who said, “I memorized from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one thousand parables.” (1)

Yahya ibn Ayyūb narrated—from Abū Qabīl—from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, who said, “We used to sit with the Messenger of Allah and write down whatever he said.” (2)

This is a ḥasan, singular hadith. It was also transmitted by Saʿīd (3) ibn ʿUfayr on his authority.

The report shows that the Companions did record some of the Prophet’s ﷺ statements. ʿAlī—may Allah honor his face—wrote down hadith from the Prophet ﷺ in a small sheet that he kept tied to his sword. (4)

He ﷺ further said, “Write for Abū Shāh,” and they also wrote for him a document

(1) Reported by Ibn ʿAsakir, p. 230, through Abu Yaʿla with this same isnad. (2) All the transmitters are reliable. Saʿid b. Kathir b. ʿAfir al-Misri, Yahya b. Ayyub al-Ghafiqi, and Abu Qabil—i.e. Hayy b. Haniʾ al-Maʿafiri al-Misri. In the printed Taqrib the last nisba was corrupted to “al-Basri,” an error repeated by the editor of Tarikh Dimashq. Abu Zurʿa also records the report in Tarikh Dimashq, no. 1514, with the same isnad, and Ibn ʿAsakir cites it again on p. 230. (3) In the printed edition the name has been mistakenly written “Saʿd.” (4) Al-Bukhari transmits this hadith several times: 12/217 (Book of Blood-wergilds, chapter “al-ʿAqila”; chapter “A Muslim is not killed for a disbeliever”), Book of Knowledge, chapter “Writing down knowledge,” and Book of Jihad, chapter “Ransoming the captive,” all through al-Shaʿbi who said: “I heard Abu Juhaifa say: I asked ʿAli, ‘Do you possess anything that is not in the Quran?’—or on another occasion, ‘that other people do not have?’ He replied, ‘By Him who split the grain and created life, we possess nothing except what is in the Quran, apart from an understanding a man may be granted of the Book, and what is in this sheet.’ I asked, ‘What is in the sheet?’ He said, ‘The rulings on blood-money (al-ʿaql), freeing captives, and that no Muslim is killed in retaliation for a disbeliever.’ Al-Bukhari (4/73) and Muslim (no. 1370) also relate—through Yazid al-Taymi from ʿAli—his statement: “We have nothing to read except the Book of Allah and this document. In it is written: ‘Al-Madina is a sanctuary between ʿAir and Thawr; whoever innovates in it, or shelters an innovator, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people; on the Day of Resurrection no compensation or ransom will be accepted from him. The covenant of the Muslims is one; the most humble of them may grant it on behalf of all. Whoever claims another lineage than that of his father, or affiliates himself to other than his masters, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people; on the Day of Resurrection no compensation or ransom will be accepted from him.’”
