Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Ibn ʿUyaynah said: People once asked ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, “Are you superior, or is your brother Hishām?”
He replied, “Let me tell you about the two of us: we both presented ourselves to Allah, and He accepted him while leaving me.”
Sufyān added, “He was killed at Yarmūk—or perhaps elsewhere—as a martyr.” (1)

17 – ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil al-Sahmī * (ʿ)
son of Hāshim ibn Suʿayd ibn Saʿd ibn Sahm ibn ʿAmr ibn Huṣayṣ ibn Kaʿb ibn Luʾay ibn Ghālib.

They recited a Quranic verse and began to argue about it until their voices grew loud. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out, angry, his face reddened, throwing dust at them and saying: “Calm down, people! This is what destroyed the nations before you: they disagreed with their prophets and pitted the scriptures against one another. The Quran was not revealed for one part to belie another; rather, each part confirms the rest. Whatever you understand of it, act upon; whatever you do not, refer to one who knows.” The chain of transmission is sound. The brother of Abd Allah b. Amr appears to be Muhammad b. Amr b. al-As, one of the younger Companions; see al-Istiyab 3/345-346 and al-Isaba 3/381. Ahmad (2/195-196) and Ibn Majah (no. 85) report the hadith through two chains from Dawud b. Abi Hind, from Amr b. Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather. Ahmad also narrates it (2/196) through Hammad b. Salama, from Humayd, Mitr al-Warraq and Dawud b. Abi Hind, all three from Amr b. Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather; in that wording they were disputing about qadar (predestination). Abd al-Razzaq includes it in his Musannaf (no. 20367) through Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from Amr b. Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather. (1) Ibn Saʿd, Tabaqat, 4/192. Ibn al-Mubarak cites the report in al-Zuhd as quoted by Ibn Hajar, al-Isaba 3/604, via Jarir b. Hazim, from Abd Allah b. Ubayd b. Umayr: ʿAmr b. al-ʿAs passed by some Quraysh who were speaking about Hisham and asked, “Which of the two of you is superior?” ʿAmr replied: “Hisham and I were at Yarmuk, each asking Allah for martyrdom; when morning came, it was withheld from me and granted to him.” The same is recorded by Ibn Saʿd; Ibn Abi Hatim, 9/63; and Abu Zurʿa al-Dimashqi, 1/217. Musa b. ʿUqba, Abu al-Aswad from ʿUrwa, Ibn Ishaq, Abu Ubayd, Musʿab, al-Zubayr and others list him among those martyred at Ajnadayn.
