al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated, on the authority of Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ḥibbān ibn Abī Jabalah, from ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, who said:
“Ever since we embraced Islam, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has not preferred anyone over Khalid and me in matters of war (1).”
Mūsā ibn ʿUlayy related—from his father—that he heard ʿAmr say:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ summoned me and said, ‘Put on your clothes (2) and take up your weapons, then come to me.’
“I went to him while he was performing wudu (ritual ablution). He raised his gaze to me and lowered it again, then said, ‘I intend to place you in command of an army. Allah will keep you safe and grant you booty, and I desire for you an ample share of wealth.’
“I replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I did not embrace Islam for the sake of wealth. I accepted Islam out of longing for the religion and to be with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’
“He said, ‘O ʿAmr, how excellent is righteous wealth for a righteous man (3).’”
Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid transmitted—from Qays—that he said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ʿAmr on the expedition of Dhāt al-Salāsil, and they were struck by severe cold.
“ʿAmr ordered them, ‘Let no one kindle a fire.’
“When they returned, the people complained about him. ʿAmr said, ‘O Prophet of Allah, they were few in number, and I feared the enemy would notice how small they were. I also forbade them to pursue the enemy, lest an ambush be waiting for them.’
“That pleased the Messenger of Allah ﷺ (4).”
