al-ʿĀṣ, who said:
“There was a sudden alarm in Madinah, so I went to Sālim, the freedman of Abū Ḥudhayfah; he was sitting with the strap of his sword wrapped around him. I picked up a sword and wrapped its strap around myself as well.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said, ‘People! Should not your first refuge have been with Allah and His Messenger? Why did you not do what these two believers did (1)?’
Al-Layth related: Yazīd narrated to us, from Ibn Yakhāmir (2) al-Saksakī, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘O Allah, bless ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, for he loves You and he loves Your Messenger (3).’ (The chain is broken.)
Aḥmad reported: Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, al-Layth informed us, from Yazīd, from Suwayd ibn Qays, from Zuhayr ibn Qays al-Balawī, from ʿAlqamah ibn Ramthah: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ to Bahrain. The Prophet then set out on a raid, and we went with him. He dozed off and said, ‘May Allah have mercy on ʿAmr.’
We began to recall everyone whose name was ʿAmr.
He dozed again and said, ‘May Allah have mercy on ʿAmr.’
Then he dozed a third time, awoke, and said, ‘May Allah have mercy on ʿAmr.’
We asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, which ʿAmr do you mean?’
He replied, ‘ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ.’
We asked, ‘And what about him?’
He said, ‘Whenever I urged the people to give charity, he would come and donate abundantly. I would ask, “O ʿAmr, where did you get this?” and he would answer, “From Allah.” ʿAmr spoke the truth; indeed, he has great good stored with Allah (4).’
