—the Messenger of Allah ﷺ tied the battle-standard for ʿAmr, placing him over Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and the foremost of his Companions.
Al-Thawrī added, “I think he said: during the expedition of Dhāt al-Salāsil.” (1)
Mujālid narrated, on the authority of al-Shaʿbī, from Qabīṣah ibn Jābir:
“I accompanied ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ and never met a man of clearer, more impeccable judgment, a more generous companion, or one whose private state so closely matched his public conduct.” (2)
Muḥammad ibn Sallām al-Jumaḥī said: Whenever ʿUmar saw a man falter in his speech, he would remark, “The Creator of this man and the Creator of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ is one!” (3)
Mūsā ibn ʿUlayy related, from his father, that he heard ʿAmr say:
“I do not tire of my garment so long as it still fits me, nor of my wife so long as she treats me well, nor of my mount so long as it carries me—for weariness is among the most blameworthy of traits.”
Abū Umayyah ibn Yaʿlā narrated, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān:
A man asked ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, “Describe the different regions for me.”
He replied, “The people of al-Shām are the most compliant toward a fellow creature and the most defiant toward the Creator; the people of Egypt are the shrewdest in youth and the dullest in old age; the people of the Ḥijāz are quickest to plunge into discord yet least able to sustain it; and the people of Iraq are the most ardent seekers of knowledge yet the furthest from attaining it.” (4)
