so I said, “May my father and mother be ransomed for you! Why do I see you looking so changed?”
He answered, “Nothing has entered my stomach for three days.”
I went out and came upon a Jewish man watering his camels. I drew water for him, receiving one date for every bucket I pulled. When I had gathered a pile of dates, I brought them to the Prophet ﷺ.
He asked, “Do you love me, Kaʿb?”
I replied, “By my father, yes.”
He said, “Poverty reaches the one who loves me more swiftly than a flood reaches its course, and hardship will befall you—so prepare for it with tajfāf (a protective shield).”
Later the Prophet ﷺ missed him. When they told him, “He is ill,” he went to visit him and said, “Receive glad tidings, Kaʿb.”
His mother exclaimed, “Congratulations to you—Paradise is assured!”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “Who is this woman making claims on Allah’s behalf?”
He answered, “It is my mother.”
The Prophet ﷺ said, “How do you know, Mother of Kaʿb? Perhaps Kaʿb has uttered something that will not benefit him, or withheld something that will not avail him.”

Misʿar narrated from Thābit ibn ʿUbayd, who said:
“My father sent me to Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah. I found him with one hand severed, so I returned and said, ‘You have sent me to a man whose hand is cut off!’ He replied, ‘His hand has already entered Paradise, and—Allah willing—the rest of him will follow.’ ⦗2⦘
