ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated the report in this very form (1). It was likewise transmitted by al-Wāqidī from Maʿmar, and in their version they said: “Ḥakīm narrated to us.”
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah—through his father, from Ḥakīm—related: “In the pre-Islamic period (jahiliyyah) I set free forty slaves.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “You have entered Islam together with all the good you performed beforehand (2).” This is the wording preserved by Ibn ʿUyaynah.
Abū Muʿāwiyah also transmitted it from Hishām with the wording, “You have embraced Islam upon the sound deeds you previously performed.”
I said, “Messenger of Allah, I will not omit any act I did in the jahiliyyah without doing its like for Allah in Islam.” In fact, he had manumitted one hundred slaves during the jahiliyyah and manumitted the same number after accepting Islam; and he had driven one hundred sacrificial camels in the jahiliyyah and the same number in Islam.
Al-Zubayr reported from Muṣʿab ibn ʿUthmān, who said, “I heard them say: He never entered the house of …”
(1) Reported by al-Tabarani, no. 3078, through Abd al-Razzaq – Maʿmar – al-Zuhri – Saʿid b. al-Musayyab and ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr, and through Hisham b. ʿUrwa from his father. Al-Waqidi also cites it in his al-Maghazi, 3/945. See Musnad al-Humaydi, no. 553, and p. 45, note 2.
(2) Reported by Ahmad, al-Musnad, 3/434, through Sufyan – Hisham b. ʿUrwa – his father – Hakim. Al-Humaydi records it as well in his Musnad, no. 554, through the same chain; al-Tabarani, no. 3084, transmits it via Bishr b. Musa – al-Humaydi – Sufyan b. ʿUyayna. It is also found in Ahmad, 3/402; al-Bukhari, 3/239 (Zakat) and 10/355 (Adab); and Muslim, no. 123 (Faith) from Ibn Shihab – ʿUrwa – Hakim b. Hizam, who said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “Messenger of Allah, I used to practise certain acts of *tahanuth* (devotional worship) in the *jahiliyya* (pre-Islamic period); will I still be rewarded for them?” He replied, “You have embraced Islam along with all the good you performed before.” (Muslim’s wording.)
Al-Bukhari, 5/122 (Manumission), and Muslim, nos. 123, 196, likewise transmit—through two chains via Hisham b. ʿUrwa, from his father—that Hakim b. Hizam had freed one hundred slaves and donated one hundred camels in the jahiliyya. After becoming Muslim he freed another hundred slaves and donated another hundred camels. He said: “I asked the Messenger of Allah, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what about the deeds I used to do in the jahiliyya as *tahanuth* (acts of piety)?’” The Prophet answered, “You have embraced Islam and will retain the reward of the good you did beforehand.”
