Ḥammād ibn Salamah—through Hishām, from his father—related that on the day of the Conquest the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proclaimed: “Whoever enters the house of Abū Sufyān is safe; whoever enters the house of Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām is safe; whoever enters the house of Budayl ibn Warqāʾ is safe; and whoever closes his own door is safe (1).”
Ibn Abī Khaythamah reported: Abū Salamah told us, narrating from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from his father, that Abū Sufyān, Ḥakīm ibn Ḥizām, and Budayl ibn Warqāʾ embraced Islam, pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he sent them to the people of Mecca to invite them to Islam (2).
Maʿmar—on the authority of al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd and ʿUrwah—said: On the day of Ḥunayn the Messenger of Allah ﷺ allotted something to Ḥakīm, but he deemed it insufficient, so the Prophet increased it. Ḥakīm then asked, “Messenger of Allah, which of your two gifts is better?” He replied, “The first.” He added, “O Ḥakīm, this wealth is green and sweet. Whoever takes it with a content heart and in a wholesome manner will find blessing in it, but whoever takes it with greed and in an unwholesome manner will find no blessing in it; he will be like one who eats yet is never satisfied.”
Ḥakīm asked, “Does that apply to you as well, Messenger of Allah?” He said, “It applies to me as well.” Ḥakīm swore, “By the One Who sent you with the truth, I shall never again diminish anyone’s share after you.” Consequently, he never accepted a stipend or an allotment until he died.
ʿUmar used to say, “O Allah, I call You to witness concerning Ḥakīm that I invite him to take his rightful due, yet he refuses.” He died in that state, and he was among the wealthiest men of Quraysh.
