Ibn Mandah said, “Hakim was born inside the Kaʿbah and lived for one hundred and twenty years. He died in 54 AH.
Al-Zubayr, on the authority of Muṣʿab ibn ʿUthmān, related:
“Hakim’s mother entered the Kaʿbah with a group of women; labor pains struck her, so a leather mat was brought when the birth came suddenly, and she delivered the child inside the Kaʿbah (1).”
Hakim was one of the nobles of Quraysh. Al-Zubayr said: “He was very dark-skinned and slender of build.”
Musnad Aḥmad: ʿAttāb ibn Ziyād narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; al-Layth informed us; ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-Mughīrah told me, from ʿIrāk ibn Mālik, that Hakim ibn Ḥizām said:
“Muḥammad ﷺ was the most beloved of people to me in the pre-Islamic era. After he was commissioned and emigrated, I attended the pilgrimage season while still an unbeliever and came upon a robe of Dhū Yazan that was being sold. I bought it for fifty dinars to present it to the Messenger of Allah. I brought it to him in Madinah and urged him to accept it as a gift, but he refused.
ʿUbayd Allah—so I think—added that he said, ‘We do not accept anything from idolaters; but if you wish, [we will take it] for its price.’
So when he declined to accept it as a gift, I sold it to him for that price (2).”
Al-Ṭabarānī also transmitted it: Muṭṭalib ibn Shuʿayb narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us. Thus, between the chains of al-Ṭabarānī and Aḥmad there is a single intervening tier.
