Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Those who narrated from him include: his son al-Mughīrah; his granddaughter Munyah bint ʿUbayd; Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī; Abū al-Minhal Sayyār; Abū al-Waḍīʾ ʿAbbād ibn Nusayb; Kinānah ibn Nuʿaym; Abū al-Wāziʿ Jābir ibn ʿAmr; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah; and others.

He later settled in Basrah and spent some time in the company of Muʿāwiyah.

Ibn Saʿd said: “He accepted Islam early and was present at the Conquest of Mecca.”

I (the author) add: and he also witnessed Khaybar.

He was dark-skinned, of medium stature, and he took part in the Ḥarūriyyah war (1) alongside ʿAlī.

Abū Nuʿaym said: He is the one who killed ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā ibn Khaṭal (2) beneath the curtains of the Kaʿbah with the Prophet’s (3) permission, peace and blessings be upon him.

Yaḥyā al-Himmanī reported: Ḥammād narrated to us, from al-Azraq ibn Qays, who said:
“We were on the bank of a river in Ahwaz when Abū Barzah arrived, leading a horse, and entered the ʿAsr prayer. A man exclaimed, ‘Look at this old fellow!’ His horse had broken loose, so he pursued it while still facing the qiblah until he caught it, seized the bridle, and then performed the prayer.

Abū Barzah heard the man’s remark, came over, and said, ‘No one has scolded me since I parted from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, except this person. I am an old man, and my home is far away. Had I focused on my prayer and left my horse, then gone looking for it afterward, I would not have reached my family until the dead of night. I kept the company of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I saw how accommodating he was.’ ”

We then began to apologize for what the man had said.
