- Ruwayfiʿ ibn Thābit al-Anṣārī al-Najjārī (recorded by Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī) – originally of Medina, later associated with Egypt, a military commander.
He was a Companion and narrated a few ḥadith.
Those who reported from him include Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, Ḥanash al-Ṣanʿānī, Ziyād ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, Abū al-Khayr Marthad al-Yazanī, Wafāʾ ibn Shurayḥ, and others.
He settled in Egypt and marked out property there.
Muʿāwiyah appointed him governor of Tripoli (in the Maghrib) in 46 AH. In 47 AH he led a campaign against Ifrīqiyah, entered it and then withdrew.
Aḥmad ibn al-Barqī said, “Ruwayfiʿ died in Barqah while serving as its governor, and I have seen his grave there.”
Abū Saʿīd ibn Yūnus said, “He passed away in Barqah as governor on behalf of Maslama ibn Mukhlad in 56 AH; his grave is still well-known to this day—may Allah be pleased with him.”
The first incursion into Ifrīqiyah occurred in 27 AH, when Jurjīr commanded the Berbers with two hundred thousand men.
Ibn Lahīʿah transmitted—through Abū al-Aswad, who related from Abū Idrīs—that he campaigned alongside ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿd in Ifrīqiyah, conquered it, and each man received one thousand dinars (1).
