8 – ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿd ibn Abi Sarḥ ibn al-Ḥārith al-ʿĀmirī*
The emir, commander of the armies, Abū Yaḥyā al-Qurashī, al-ʿĀmirī—descended from ʿĀmir ibn Luʾayy ibn Ghalib.
He was the foster-brother of ʿUthmān.
He enjoyed the rank of Companion and transmitted hadith.
Among those who narrated from him was al-Haytham ibn Shafī.
ʿUthmān appointed him governor of Egypt.
Some say he was present at Ṣiffīn, yet the stronger view is that he held aloof from the turmoil and withdrew to al-Ramlah.
Muṣʿab ibn ʿAbd Allah reported: On the Day of the Conquest, ʿUthmān secured safe-conduct for Ibn Abi Sarḥ from the Prophet ﷺ, even though the Prophet had ordered him to be killed.
He is the one who opened Ifriqiyah.
Al-Dāraqutnī said: He had apostatized, so the Prophet declared his blood lawful; he later returned to Islam, and ʿUthmān pleaded on his behalf.
Ibn Yūnus said: He commanded the right wing of ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ’s forces and was the foremost horseman of Banū ʿĀmir.
He campaigned in Ifriqiyah (1).
In his later years he settled in ʿAsqalān and pledged allegiance to neither ʿAlī nor Muʿāwiyah.
