—al-Mughīrah; and from the Emigrants: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Budayl ibn Waraqāʾ al-Khuzāʿī.
Thus, those who stood with ʿAlī were Qays and Ibn Budayl, while al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah kept to himself. (1)
Zayd ibn Aslam narrated—through his father—from al-Mughīrah, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ gave me the kunya Abū ʿĪsā.” (2)
Habīb ibn al-Shahīd likewise reported from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, that ʿUmar said to his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, “What is this ‘Abū ʿĪsā’?” He replied, “Commander of the Believers! Al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah had adopted that kunya during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” (3)
Hammād ibn Salamah transmitted from Zayd ibn Aslam that ʿUmar changed the kunya of al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah, calling him Abū ʿAbd Allāh instead, and remarked, “Does Jesus have a father?” (4)
Abū Mūsā al-Thaqafī said: “Al-Mughīrah was a tall man, blind in one eye; he lost that eye on the day of Yarmūk.” (5)

(2) Reported by Abu Dawud (no. 4963), Book of Manners, chapter “On someone who assumes the kunya Abu ʿIsa,” through the chain: Harun b. Zayd b. Abi ’l-Zarqa – his father – Hisham b. Saʿd – Zayd b. Aslam – his father, who related that ʿUmar b. al-Khattab struck a son of his who used the kunya Abu ʿIsa, while al-Mughira b. Shuʿba also used that kunya. ʿUmar said to him, “Is it not enough for you to be called Abu ʿAbd Allah?” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself gave me the kunya.” ʿUmar responded, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has already had all his past and future sins forgiven, whereas we still remain in our uncertain state (fi jaljatina).” Thereafter al-Mughira continued to be called Abu ʿAbd Allah until he died.
The chain is sound (hasan). The phrase “wa inna fi jaljatina” means: “We are still counted among ordinary Muslims like ourselves and do not know what will happen to us.” In Ibn al-Athir’s Nihaya, jalj denotes the heads of people; its singular is jalja. The report is also in Ibn ʿAsakir, Tarikh Dimashq, vol. 17, p. 35 a.
