Ibn Mandah said: He owned a house in Ḥimṣ, another in Ramla, and another in Egypt.
ʿĀṣim al-Aḥwal narrated from Abū al-ʿĀliyah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Who will guarantee for me that he will never ask anyone for anything, and I in return will guarantee Paradise for him?”
Thawbān responded, “I will.”
From then on he asked no one for anything. (1)
Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated from Ḍamḍam ibn Zurʿah:
Shurayḥ ibn ʿUbayd said: Thawbān fell ill in Ḥimṣ while ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qurt was its governor, yet the governor did not visit him. A certain man came in to see Thawbān, and Thawbān asked him, “Do you write?”
“Yes,” he answered.
“Then write,” Thawbān said.
So he wrote: “To the governor ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qurt, from Thawbān, the freedman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. To proceed: had Moses or Jesus possessed a freedman who was in your vicinity, you would surely have visited him.”
When the letter reached the governor and he read it, he sprang up in alarm. The people exclaimed, “What has happened—has some urgent matter arrived?” He went straight to Thawbān, visited him, sat with him for a while, and then rose to leave.
Thawbān seized his cloak and said, “Sit until I relate something to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Seventy thousand from my community will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment, and with every thousand there will be seventy thousand more.’”
This was recorded by Aḥmad in his Musnad. (2)
