Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

When the Year of the Conquest came, the Prophet ﷺ pardoned Shaybah, granted him a reprieve, and Shaybah accompanied the Prophet to Hunayn while still a polytheist. It is reported that he had intended to assassinate the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but Allah then bestowed Islam upon him; his conversion was sound, and on the Day of Hunayn he fought and remained steadfast alongside the Prophet.

He narrated from the Prophet ﷺ and from Abu Bakr and ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with them. Those who transmitted from him include his two children, Musʿab ibn Shaybah and Ṣafiyyah bint Shaybah, as well as Abū Wāʾil, ʿIkrimah, the freedman of Ibn ʿAbbās, and his grandson Musāfiʿ ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaybah.

One of his reports from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb appears in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (1). Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Mājah also recorded narrations from him.

He died in 59 AH; some said in 58 AH, in Mecca.

His daughter Ṣafiyyah was born during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ. It is said that she belonged to the ranks of the Companions, but this has not been reliably established (2).

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, 3/363, Book of Hajj, chapter “Clothing the Kaʿba,” through the isnad: ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhab – Khalid ibn al-Harith – Sufyan – Wasil al-Ahdab – Abu Waʾil, who said: “I was sitting with Shayba on the chair inside the Kaʿba. He said: ‘ʿUmar once sat in this very spot and said: I have decided not to leave in it a single piece of gold or silver without distributing it.’ I replied: ‘Your two companions did not do that.’ He said: ‘They are the two men I follow.’ Ibn Majah (no. 3116) records it with this wording: ‘ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab sat where you are sitting and said: I will not leave until I divide the property of the Kaʿba among the poor Muslims. I said: You will not do that. He replied: Indeed I will. I said: Why? He answered: Because the Prophet ﷺ saw its place, and Abu Bakr—while both of them were in greater need of the money than you are—yet they did not touch it.’ So he got up and left it unchanged. (2) Yet Ibn Hajar, in Fath al-Bari, 9/207, quoting al-Mizzi in al-Atraf, notes that al-Bukhari, in the Book of Hajj, immediately after the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and Ibn ʿAbbas on the inviolability of Mecca, cited the report: ‘Aban ibn Salih narrated from al-Hasan ibn Muslim, from Safiyya bint Shayba, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ giving a sermon in the year of the Conquest, saying: O people, Allah declared Mecca sacred the day He created the heavens and the earth….’ Ibn Majah connects the chain (no. 3109).
