—al-Walid wrote to Muʿāwiyah informing him of Abu Hurayrah’s death, saying:
“See who he has left behind; give them ten thousand dirhams and treat them well, for he was among those who supported ʿUthmān and was with him in the house.” (1)
ʿUmayr ibn Hāniʾ al-ʿAnsī reported that Abu Hurayrah used to pray, “O Allah, do not let me live to see the year sixty.” (2)
He died in that very year, or a year before it.
Al-Wāqidī said: He used to reside at Dhū al-Ḥulayfah, and he owned a house in Medina that he donated in charity to his freedmen. He died in 59 AH at the age of seventy-eight, and he led the funeral prayer over ʿĀʾishah in Ramadan of 58 AH. He also led the funeral prayer over Umm Salamah in Shawwāl of 59 AH. (3)
I say: the correct view is otherwise.
Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah narrated from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah that ʿĀʾishah and Abu Hurayrah both died in 57 AH, two years before Muʿāwiyah. He was corroborated by Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr, Ibn al-Madīnī, Khalīfah, al-Madāʾinī, and al-Fallās. (4)
