Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Baqī relates: Ṭālūt ibn ʿAbbād told us, Abū Hilāl told us, Ibn Sīrīn reported from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Had ten of the rabbis of the Jews believed in me, every Jew on the face of the earth would have believed.” (1)

Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, through Qays, from Abū Hurayrah, narrated:
“When I set out to meet the Prophet ﷺ I recited on the way:
‘O night whose length and hardship were great—
yet from the abode of unbelief it delivered me.’
A slave boy of mine had run away; but when I arrived and pledged my allegiance, the boy suddenly appeared. The Prophet ﷺ asked, ‘Is this your slave, Abū Hurayrah?’ I replied, ‘He is free for the sake of Allah,’ and I set him free.” (2)

Ayyūb transmitted from Ibn Sīrīn that Abū Hurayrah said to his daughter, “Do not wear gold, for I fear it may become a flame against you.” (3)

(1) Al-Bukhari also recorded it, 7/214, in The Migration of the Prophet: “Chapter on the Jews’ coming to the Prophet when he reached Madinah,” through the isnad Muslim ibn Ibrahim – Qurra – Muhammad – Abu Hurayra – the Prophet, who said: “Had ten of the Jews believed in me, all the Jews would have believed.” The scholars explain that the ten meant here are ten of their leading figures. (2) Reported by Ahmad 2/286; by al-Bukhari 5/117, Book of Manumission, “Chapter: When someone says to his slave, ‘He is for Allah,’ intending emancipation”; and by Ibn Saad 4/325, all through the chain Abu Usama Hammad ibn Usama – Ismail ibn Abi Khalid – Qays ibn Abi Hazim – Abu Hurayra. In the first half-line of the verse there is a kharm on the first foot; its full form would be “wa-ya laylata” or “fa-ya laylata.” Al-Zajjaj notes that among the recognised flaws in the tawil metre is kharm, the omission of the initial fa of the foot fa‘ulun. (3) The isnad is sound; the report appears in the Musannaf (no. 19938). His statement is understood as an act of scrupulousness, or to avoid ostentation and pride, or for a similar purpose, for the Prophet permitted women to wear various kinds of gold jewellery—necklaces, rings, bracelets, anklets, armlets, and collars—and this is a point on which there is no disagreement among Muslims, as recorded by several scholars such as al-Jassas and al-Kiya al-Harasi in Ahkam al-Quran, and by al-Bayhaqi in …
