Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Likewise, Mālik acted on Abū Hurayrah’s hadith that a vessel must be washed seven times after a dog has lapped from it (1), even though, by the dictates of analogy, he held that no washing was necessary, since in his view the dog is pure. Indeed, Abū Ḥanīfah went so far as to abandon analogy for something less weighty than Abū Hurayrah’s hadith: in the matter of audible laughter during prayer he relied on a single mursal report (2).

Abū Hurayrah’s memory was exceptionally sound; we know of no instance in which he erred in narrating a hadith.

Baqī ibn Makhlad relates: Abū Kāmil told us, ʿAbd al-Wārith told us, I heard Muḥammad ibn al-Munkadir report from Abū Hurayrah, who said, “When one of you is sitting in the sun and the shade withdraws from him, let him move from his place.” (3)

Darqutni, p. 237, al-Hakim 1/430, and al-Bayhaqi 4/229 transmit—through the chain of Muhammad b. Abd Allah al-Ansari, Muhammad b. Amr, Abu Salama, and Abu Hurayra—that the Prophet said: “Whoever breaks the fast in Ramadan out of forgetfulness is not required to make up the day, nor to give any expiation.” The isnad is sound (hasan) and Ibn Hibban declared it sahih (no. 906). (1) Reported by Malik 1/34, Purification – “Comprehensive rulings on wudu”; by al-Bukhari 1/239-240, Purification – “If a dog drinks from one of your vessels, wash it seven times”; and by Muslim (279) (90), Purification – “Ruling on a dog’s lapping.” (2) Abd al-Razzaq, al-Musannaf (3761), narrates from Maʿmar, Qatada, and Abu l-ʿAliya al-Riyahi that “a blind man fell into a well while the Prophet was leading the prayer. Some of those praying laughed, so the Prophet ordered anyone who had laughed to repeat his wudu and the prayer.” Although mursal, the chain is sound. Abd al-Razzaq also relates it (3760) through Hisham b. Hassan, Hafsa bt. Sirin, and Abu l-ʿAliya. See Nasb al-Raya 1/47, 53. (3) Chain sahih. Also recorded by Ahmad 2/383 via Affan – Abd al-Warith – Muhammad b. al-Munkadir – Abu Hurayra. Abu Dawud (4822) and Humaydi’s Musnad (1138) transmit it through Sufyan: Muhammad b. al-Munkadir said, “Someone who heard Abu Hurayra told me that Abu l-Qasim said….” The first version is stronger because it omits the unnamed intermediary; Ibn al-Munkadir did hear directly from Abu Hurayra, so the isnad is continuous.
