the House of Allah were to be torn down or set ablaze, they would not have believed him. (1)
Al-Faḍl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ reported: Ismāʿīl ibn Umayyah narrated to us, and Muḥammad ibn Qays ibn Makḥramah informed me:
A man once came to Zayd ibn Thābit and asked him about a matter. Zayd replied, “Go to Abū Hurayrah. While I, he, and another man were in the mosque, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us as we were supplicating and remembering our Lord. He sat down with us, and we fell silent.
He said, ‘Resume what you were doing.’
So my companion and I offered our supplications before Abū Hurayrah did, and the Messenger of Allah kept saying ‘Āmīn.’ Then Abū Hurayrah prayed, saying,
‘O Allah, I ask You for what these two companions of mine have asked You, and I ask You for knowledge that will never be forgotten.’
The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Āmīn.’
We said, ‘Messenger of Allah, we too ask Allah for knowledge that will never be forgotten.’
He replied, ‘The young man from Daws has outstripped you.’ (2)
This report is unique to al-Faḍl ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, and he is truthful.
Hushaym narrated from Yaʿlā ibn ʿAṭāʾ, from al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Ibn ʿUmar:
He once passed by Abū Hurayrah while the latter was relating that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said, ‘Whoever follows a funeral procession will have one qīrāṭ.’
Ibn ʿUmar said, ‘Be careful about what you relate from the Messenger of Allah.’
Abū Hurayrah then rose, took him by the hand, and went with him to ʿĀʾishah. He said to her, ‘I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah say, “Whoever follows a funeral …”—the rest of the ḥadīth?’
She replied, ‘Yes, by Allah, I did.’
