—his uncle Abū Ṭālib took him under his protection, shielding him and standing between him and their harm. When Quraysh saw that Muḥammad ﷺ would not appease them over anything they found objectionable, and that his uncle continued to defend him, they went to Abū Ṭālib and said, “Either you restrain him from attacking our gods and speaking about our religion, or you must leave him to us.” Abū Ṭālib answered them gently, dismissed them in a courteous manner, and they departed.

Thereafter the men drew apart and resentment flared; Quraysh spoke increasingly about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, urging one another against him, and they returned to Abū Ṭālib once more. They said, “You possess lineage and honor among us. We already asked you to stop your nephew and you did not. By Allah, we cannot endure the reviling of our gods and the disparagement of our forefathers’ ways. Either you curb him, or we and you will meet in combat over this matter until one of the two parties is destroyed.” They then left him.

The prospect of being cut off from his people and earning their hostility weighed heavily on Abū Ṭālib, yet he never even considered surrendering the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to them or abandoning him.

Yūnus ibn Bukayr related from Ṭalḥah ibn Yaḥyā ibn ʿUbayd Allāh, from Mūsā ibn Ṭalḥah, who said: ʿAqīl ibn Abī Ṭālib told me, “Quraysh came to Abū Ṭālib and said, ‘Your nephew has offended us in our gathering place and in our mosque; stop him.’ Abū Ṭālib said, ‘ʿAqīl, go and bring Muḥammad to me.’ I went to him and brought him out of a ḥufsh or kubs—a small dwelling. When he arrived, Abū Ṭālib said, ‘Your cousins here claim that you are harming them in their gathering place and in their mosque, so spare them that.’

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his eyes to the sky and said, ‘Do you see this sun?’ They replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘I am no more able to abandon what I have been commanded than you are to kindle from it a single spark.’ Abū Ṭālib then said, ‘By Allah, our nephew has never lied to us—now leave.’”

Al-Bukhārī recorded this in al-Tārīkh through Abū Kurayb, from Yūnus.

Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb ibn ʿUtbah ibn al-Mughīrah informed me that Quraysh
