The Imām, jurist, mujtahid, and master memoriser; the Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abū Hurayrah al-Dawsī, the Yemeni—foremost among the reliable guardians of ḥadīth.
Scholars have differed greatly over his personal name; the strongest view is that it is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣakhr.
Others have said: Ibn Ghanm.
It is also reported that his name was ʿAbd Shams, and likewise ʿAbd Allāh.
Another view: Sakīn.
Another: ʿĀmir.
Another: Barīr.
Another: ʿAbd ibn Ghanm.
Another: ʿAmr.
Another: Saʿīd.
There is similar disagreement concerning his father’s name.
Hishām ibn al-Kalbī stated: He is ʿUmayr ibn ʿĀmir ibn Dhī al-Sharā ibn Ṭarīf ibn ʿAyyān ibn Abī Ṣaʿb ibn Hunayyah ibn Saʿd ibn Thaʿlabah ibn Sulaym ibn Fahm ibn Ghanm ibn Daws ibn ʿUdhthān ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Zahrān ibn Kaʿb ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Mālik ibn Naṣr of al-Azd.
Khalīfah ibn Khayyāṭ records precisely the same lineage, except that he reads ʿAttāb in place of ʿAyyān and Munabbih instead of Hunayyah.
