Barwaʿ (1).
Among those who narrated from him were Masrūq, ʿAlqamah, al-Aswad, Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh, al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, and others.
He resided in Kūfa, then travelled to Yazīd’s court. When he witnessed objectionable conduct on Yazīd’s part, he set out for Medina and revoked his allegiance to him.
He was counted among the senior figures involved in the incident of al-Ḥarra.
Some said his kunya was Abū Sinān; others said Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; still others, Abū Muḥammad; and some, Abū Yazīd.
He was captured and slain—put to the sword while restrained—on the Day of al-Ḥarra, at somewhat over seventy years of age. He was killed in 63 AH.

(1) Reported by Ahmad (4099, 4100, 4276); Abu Dawud (2114–2116); al-Nasai, 6/121, 123, Book of Marriage, chapter: The permissibility of marrying without stipulating a bridal gift; al-Tirmidhi (1145), Book of Breast-feeding, chapter: Concerning a man who marries a woman and dies before fixing her *sadaq* (dower); and Ibn Majah (1891), Book of Marriage— all through the chain of al-Sha‘bi, from Masruq, from ‘Abd Allah, about a man who married a woman, died before consummation and before determining the dower. Ibn Mas‘ud ruled: she is entitled to the full dower, must observe the *‘idda* (waiting period), and inherits from him.
Ma‘qil ibn Sinan then said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ give this same judgment regarding Barua‘ bint Washiq.” The isnad is sound. In another wording: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled, concerning Barua‘ bint Washiq, a woman from among us, exactly as you have ruled,” at which Ibn Mas‘ud rejoiced.
The hadith was declared authentic by al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban (1263, 1264) and al-Hakim, 2/180, and al-Dhahabi concurred. Al-Qamus says the name Barua‘ is pronounced like Jarwal and should not be read with kasra, but the commentator objects, noting that most hadith scholars affirm the kasra and transmit it accordingly on the basis of direct audition.
