Those who narrated from him were his two sons—Alqamah (1) and ʿAbd al-Jabbār—as well as Wāʾil ibn Alqamah, Kulayb ibn Shihāb, and others.
(1) It is firmly established that Alqama heard directly from his father, for he explicitly says “my father narrated to me” in several hadiths—contrary to what al-Hafiz stated in Taqrib.
Al-Nasaʾi reports in his Sunan, 2/194, “Chapter: Raising the hands when rising from rukuʿ”: “Suwayd b. Nasr told us; ʿAbd Allah b. al-Mubarak informed us; Qays b. Sulaym al-ʿAnbari said: Alqama b. Waʾil narrated to me, saying, ‘My father related to me: I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and saw him raise his hands when he opened the prayer, when he bowed, and when he said, Samʿa Allahu li-man hamidah,’” whereupon Qays pointed to the level of the ears. The chain is sound.
Al-Bukhari recorded it in his booklet Rafʿ al-Yadayn: “Abu Nuʿaym al-Fadl b. Dukayn related to us; Qays b. Sulaym al-ʿAnbari informed us: I heard Alqama b. Waʾil b. Hujr say, ‘My father narrated to me…’”
Muslim transmits it in his Sahih (no. 401), Book of Prayer, chapter “Placing the right hand upon the left after the opening takbir, below the chest and above the navel”: “Zuhayr b. Harb—ʿAffan—Hammam—Muhammad b. Jahada—ʿAbd al-Jabbar b. Waʾil, from Alqama b. Waʾil and a family servant, both reporting from their father Waʾil b. Hujr that he saw the Prophet ﷺ raise his hands when he entered the prayer….”
Muslim also records it (no. 1680) in the Book of Qasama, chapter “The validity of a confession”: “ʿUbayd Allah b. Muʿadh al-ʿAnbari—his father—Abu Yunus—from Simak b. Harb—that Alqama b. Waʾil told him that his father had related….”
After citing the hadith of Alqama b. Waʾil from his father in his Sunan (no. 1454), Book of Hudud, chapter “The woman coerced into fornication,” al-Tirmidhi comments: “This is a hasan gharib sahih hadith. Alqama b. Waʾil b. Hujr heard from his father; he was older than ʿAbd al-Jabbar b. Waʾil, and ʿAbd al-Jabbar did not hear from his father.”
Al-Bukhari likewise states explicitly in al-Tarikh al-Kabir, 7/41, that Alqama b. Waʾil heard from his father.
What is reported in Nasb al-Raya from al-Tirmidhi’s ʿIlal al-Kabir—namely, that he asked Muhammad b. Ismaʿil whether Alqama heard from his father and was told, “He was born six months after his father died”—is an error, even if the wording is correctly transmitted. Al-Bukhari, God have mercy on him, said that about Alqama’s brother ʿAbd al-Jabbar, as found in al-Tarikh al-Kabir, 6/106-107. Al-Tirmidhi himself, right after another hadith in his Sunan (no. 1453), says: “I heard Muhammad say: ʿAbd al-Jabbar b. Waʾil did not hear from his father and did not meet him; it is said that he was born a few months after his father’s death.”
Abu Dawud quotes Ibn Maʿin—see Tahdhib al-Tahdhib—to the effect that ʿAbd al-Jabbar’s father died while his mother was pregnant with him.
Al-Samʿani states in al-Ansab: “Abu Muhammad ʿAbd al-Jabbar b. Waʾil b. Hujr al-Kindī transmits from his mother and (reportedly) from his father; he is Alqama’s brother. Anyone who claims he heard from his father is mistaken, for Waʾil b. Hujr died while his mother was pregnant with him, and she gave birth six months later.”
I say: Even the assertion that ʿAbd al-Jabbar was born after his father’s death is open to reconsideration, for …
