Yunus ibn Bukayr narrated, on the authority of Ibn Ishaq: “Someone who had heard ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal—though he made me promise not to name him—related to me, from Ibn ʿAbbas, from ʿAli, who said:
When the verse, ‘And warn your nearest kindred’ (Quran 26:214), was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I knew that if I confronted my people straightaway I would receive from them what I dislike, so I remained silent. Then Gabriel came to me and said, “O Muhammad, if you do not do what your Lord has commanded you, He will punish you.”’
ʿAli continued: He summoned me and said, ‘O ʿAli, Allah has ordered me to warn my closest relatives. I realized that if I broached the matter with them first, I would encounter from them what I dislike, so I kept silent. Then Gabriel came to me and said, “If you do not carry out what you have been commanded, your Lord will punish you. So, O ʿAli, prepare for us a leg of mutton with one saʿ (a standard measure) of grain, and ready for us a ʿus (large bowl) of milk, then gather for me the sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib.”’
I did so, and they gathered—about forty men that day, give or take one. Among them were his uncles Abu Talib, Hamzah, al-ʿAbbas, and Abu Lahab. I placed the dish before them; the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a small piece, chewed it, scattered it around the dish, and said, ‘Eat in the name of Allah.’ They ate until they were full, yet we saw nothing on it except the traces of their fingers—by Allah, any one of them would normally consume something that size alone. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Serve them drink, O ʿAli.’ I brought the wooden cup, and they drank from it until they were all quenched; by Allah, any one of them would ordinarily drink that much by himself.
When the Prophet ﷺ was about to speak, Abu Lahab forestalled him, saying, ‘This is your companion’s sorcery!’ So they dispersed before he could address them. The next day the Prophet ﷺ said to me, ‘Prepare for us, O ʿAli, the same meal you made yesterday.’ I did so and gathered them again. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ repeated what he had done the day before; they ate until they were satisfied, and they drank from it.
