Muḥammad ibn Abī Ḥafṣah—through al-Zuhrī, from Ṣafwān ibn ʿAbdullāh, from his father—said (meaning: his own father reported):
“I came and asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, will the one who has not emigrated be ruined?’ He replied, ‘No, Abū Wahb; go back to the flatlands of Mecca.’” (1)
I add: The Prophet’s ﷺ statement is firmly established: “There is no migration after the Conquest, but there is still striving and intention.” (2)
Al-Tirmidhī also related—on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the Day of Uḥud said: “O Allah, curse Abū Sufyān; O Allah, curse al-Ḥārith ibn Hishām; O Allah, curse Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah.” Then the verse was revealed: “You have no share in the decision, whether He relents toward them …” (Āl ʿImrān 127). Allah did relent toward them; they embraced Islam, and their Islam proved sound. (3)
I say: The best of them in Islam was al-Ḥārith.
Al-Zuhrī further narrated—from members of the household of ʿUmar, from ʿUmar—that when the Conquest took place the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for Ṣafwān ibn Umayyah, Abū Sufyān, and al-Ḥārith ibn
(1) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad, 3:401 and 6:465, through the transmission of Rawh with this same chain; all the narrators are reliable.
(2) Reported by al-Bukhari, 6/3, at the beginning of the Book of Jihad, and by Muslim, no. 1353, from the hadith of Ibn Abbas.
(3) Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no. 3004, in the Tafsir section; its chain contains Umar ibn Hamza, who is weak, even though Muslim narrates from him elsewhere. It is also found in the Musnad, no. 5674, and in al-Tabari, no. 7819. Al-Bukhari includes it in his Sahih, 7/281, through the route of Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak, from Hanzala ibn Abi Sufyan al-Jumahi, from Salim ibn Abd Allah, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to invoke curses upon Safwan ibn Umayya, Suhayl ibn Amr, and al-Harith ibn Hisham, whereupon the verse ‘You have no part in the matter… for they are wrongdoers’ (Q 3:128) was revealed.”
Al-Bukhari also narrates it in 7/281, 8/170, and 13/263–264 through the route of Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, who said: “Salim told me, on the authority of his father, that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he raised his head from the bowing in the final rakʿa of Fajr, say, ‘O Allah, curse so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so,’ after he had said, ‘samiʿa Allahu liman hamidah, rabbana wa-laka-l-hamd.’ Then Allah revealed, ‘You have no part in the matter… for they are wrongdoers’ (Q 3:128).”
