Section: The Prophet’s ﷺ summons of his clan to Allah and the opposition he faced from his people
Jarir related—from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, from Musa ibn Talhah, from Abu Hurayrah—who said: When the verse, “And warn your closest kinsfolk” (Quran 26:214), was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ called the Quraysh together, the great and the small among them. He declared:
“O sons of Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy, save yourselves from the Fire!
O sons of Murrah ibn Kaʿb, save yourselves from the Fire!
O sons of ʿAbd Shams, save yourselves from the Fire!
O sons of ʿAbd Manāf, save yourselves from the Fire!
O sons of Hashim, save yourselves from the Fire!
O sons of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, save yourselves from the Fire!
Fāṭimah, save yourself from the Fire!
Indeed, I possess no power with Allah to benefit you in any way; what I do have is the tie of kinship, and I shall maintain it as it deserves.”
Muslim recorded this ḥadith through Qutaybah and Zuhayr, from Jarir; they both transmitted it on the authority of al-Zuhri, from Ibn al-Musayyib and Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah.
Sulaymān al-Taymi related—from Abu ʿUthmān, from Qabīṣah ibn al-Mukhāriq and Zuhayr ibn ʿAmr—who said: When the verse, “And warn your closest kinsfolk” (Quran 26:214), was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to a rocky outcrop of the mountain, climbed it, and called out:
“O sons of ʿAbd Manāf! I am a plain warner. My example and yours is like that of a man who sees the enemy and rushes to protect his family. Fearing they might overtake him before he can alert them, he cries out, ‘Yā ṣabāḥāh!’ (Beware, the enemy is upon you at dawn!).”
