Siyar Aʿlām al-NubalāʾShams al‑Din al‑Dhahabi

Abu Sufyan mentions him in the lengthy narration preserved in the Sahih (1). In Baqiyy’s Musnad, Dihyah is credited with three singular hadiths.

117 – Abu Juhm ibn Hudhayfah al-Qurashi al-ʿAdawi *
He is the Companion referred to in the Prophet’s ﷺ words: “Take this khamīsah (striped cloak) and bring me the anbijāniyyah of Abu Juhm (2).”

It is said that his given name was ʿUbayd and that he was among those who embraced Islam at the Conquest. He had been one of those who rebuilt the House in the pre-Islamic period; he then lived on until he helped Ibn al-Zubayr rebuild it again—more than eighty years separated the two reconstructions. He was an authority on genealogy and was summoned

The report adds: “He asked for the letter of the Messenger of Allah that Dihyah had delivered to the ruler of Busra.” Further sources: Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat, 5/451; Ibn Maʿin, Tarikh, no. 700; Khalifah, Tarikh, p. 227; Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, al-Istiʿab, 4/1623; Ibn al-Athir, Usd al-Ghaba, 6/57; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam, 2/330; Ibn Hajar, al-Isaba, 11/66. According to the hadith of Aisha: “The Prophet prayed in a khamisa that had patterns on it. He looked at the patterns, and when he finished he said: ‘Take this khamisa away from me and bring me the anbujaniyya of Abu Jahm, for its patterns distracted me just now from my prayer.’” A khamisa is a square woolen cloak with two decorative bands; an anbujaniyya is a coarse woolen cloak with a rough nap and no ornamentation, considered an inexpensive, heavy garment. The Prophet asked that the khamisa be returned—though it had been a gift—because its designs caused distraction, and requested the anbujaniyya instead so as not to offend the giver by rejecting his present outright.
