He was also the Prophet’s envoy, entrusted with carrying his letter to the governor of Busra so that it might reach Heraclius.
He transmitted a number of hadiths.
Those who narrated from him include: Manṣūr ibn Saʿīd al-Kalbī (1), Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaddād ibn al-Hād, ʿĀmir al-Shaʿbī, and Khālid ibn Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah.
He was present at the Battle of Yarmūk, commanding a kurdūs (2), and afterward settled in al-Mizzah (3).
Aḥmad said: “Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; ʿUmar—of the family of Ḥudhayfah—narrated to us, from al-Shaʿbī, from Dihyah al-Kalbī:
I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not breed a donkey with a horse for you so that it will produce a mule you can ride?’
He replied, ‘Only those who do not know would do such a thing (4).’”
ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus also related it from ʿUmar, from al-Shaʿbī, as a mursal report, attributing the remark to Ḥudhayfah.
Ibn Saʿd said: “Dihyah accepted Islam before Badr but did not take part in that battle. He was said to resemble Gabriel and lived on into the era of Muʿāwiyah.”
