Al-Tayālisī relates in his Musnad: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim, from Zur, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“I was a young man tending the sheep of ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ in Mecca when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abū Bakr passed by, fleeing from the polytheists. They said, ‘Boy, do you have any milk with which you could give us to drink?’ I replied, ‘I am responsible for this flock and may not give you its milk.’ They then asked, ‘Have you a female kid that the buck has not yet covered?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ I brought one to them. Abū Bakr held it, the Prophet ﷺ took its udder, and he supplicated. The udder swelled with milk. Abū Bakr found a hollowed stone, and the Prophet ﷺ milked into it. They drank, then gave me to drink. After that he said to the udder, ‘Contract,’ and it returned to its former state.
Later I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, ‘Teach me some of that good speech’—meaning the Quran. He replied, ‘You are a boy who will be taught.’ From his own lips I learned seventy surahs, and no one could contest me in them.”
