Hammād ibn Zayd—through Yazīd ibn Ḥāzim, from Sulaymān ibn Yasār—narrated:
“Abu Usayd lost his sight before the assassination of ʿUthmān, whereupon he said, ‘Praise be to Allah who, when He intended to send trial upon His servants, shielded my eyes from it.’” (1)
- Ḥuwayṭib ibn ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā al-Qurashī al-ʿĀmirī • (Bukhārī, Muslim, Sunan)
A long-lived Companion who embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest.
He transmits—through ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Saʿdī, from ʿUmar—the report concerning the remuneration of state officials. (2)
Al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd, himself a Companion, narrated this hadith from him, and we know of no other traditions transmitted by Ḥuwayṭib.

Other principal sources that mention this report or biographical entry include: Ibn Sa‘d, al-Tabaqat al-kubra 5/454; Ibn Ma‘in, al-Tarikh, no. 140; Khalifa, al-Tabaqat p. 27 and al-Tarikh p. 223; al-Bukhari, al-Tarikh al-kabir 3/127; Ibn Qutayba, al-Ma‘arif pp. 311, 312, 342; Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-ta‘dil 3/314; al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak 3/492; Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, al-Isti‘ab 1/399; Ibn ‘Asakir, Tarikh Dimashq 5/19; Ibn al-Athir, Usd al-ghaba 2/75; al-Mizzi, Tahdhib al-kamal p. 349; al-Dhahabi, Tarikh al-Islam 2/278; Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-tahdhib 3/66–67 and al-Isaba 2/304; Ibn al-‘Imad, Khulasat tadhhib al-kamal p. 99.
(2) Al-Bukhari, Sahih, 13/133 (Book of Rulings, chapter: The remuneration of judges and those in authority), from the chain: Abū al-Yaman – Shu‘ayb – al-Zuhri, who said: “Sa’ib b. Yazid b. Ukht Namir informed me that Huyaytib b. ‘Abd al-‘Uzza told him that ‘Abd Allah b. al-Sa‘di told him: He came to ‘Umar during his caliphate. ‘Umar said to him, ‘Has it not reached me that you undertake public duties and, when the allowance is given to you, you dislike it?’ He replied, ‘Indeed.’ ‘Umar asked, ‘Why do you do that?’ He answered, ‘I possess horses and servants and am well-off, and I want my stipend to count as charity for the Muslims.’ ‘Umar said, ‘Do not do that. I once intended the same. The Messenger of Allah used to give me money and I would say, “Give it to someone poorer than I.” Then one day he gave me some wealth and I repeated, “Give it to someone poorer than I,” so the Prophet said, “Take it, invest it for yourself and give charity from it. Whatever of this wealth comes to you without your seeking it or being eager for it, then accept it; otherwise, do not let your soul pursue it.”’ ”
A noteworthy feature of this chain is that al-Zuhri transmits the report consecutively from four Companions: al-Sa’ib, Huyaytib, Ibn al-Sa‘di, and ‘Umar.
