I remark: ʿAlī was not mentioned because at the time he was still a child of about ten years.

Al-ʿAbbās ibn Sālim and Yaḥyā ibn Abī Kathīr narrated from Abū Umāmah, from ʿAmr ibn ʿAbasah, who said:
“I came to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—while he was in Mecca, keeping his mission concealed. I asked, ‘What are you?’ He replied, ‘A prophet.’ I said, ‘And what is a prophet?’ He answered, ‘A messenger of Allah.’ I asked, ‘Has Allah sent you?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I asked, ‘With what message has He sent you?’ He replied, ‘That Allah alone be worshipped, idols be broken, and ties of kinship be upheld.’ I said, ‘Excellent—what a noble message. Who has followed you so far?’ He said, ‘A free man and a slave,’ meaning Abū Bakr and Bilāl. ʿAmr would later say, ‘I found myself the fourth among them, so I accepted Islam and said, “I will follow you, Messenger of Allah.” He replied, “No; return to your people. When you hear that I have departed, then come and join me.”’ Muslim recorded this report.

Hāshim ibn Hāshim narrated from Ibn al-Musayyib that he heard Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ say, ‘For seven days I was one third of the entire Muslim community.’ Al-Bukhārī recorded it.

Zā’idah narrated from ʿĀṣim, from Zur, from ʿAbd Allah, who said: ‘The first to proclaim their Islam openly were seven: the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—Abū Bakr, ʿAmmār and his mother, Ṣuhayb, Bilāl, and al-Miqdād.’ Yaḥyā ibn Abī Bukayr was the sole transmitter of this report.

Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated from Qays, from Saʿīd ibn Zayd, who said, ‘By Allah, I remember when ʿUmar had me and his sister bound because of our Islam—before ʿUmar himself accepted the faith. And had anyone abandoned the religion because of what you did to ʿUthmān, he would have had an excuse.’ Al-Bukhārī recorded this report.
