Saʿid ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Umayyah, together with his wife Āminah bint Khalaf; Ḥāṭib ibn ʿAmr; Abū Hudhayfah Hishām ibn ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah; Wāqid ibn ʿAbd Allah, an ally of Banū ʿAdī; and Khālid, ʿĀmir, ʿĀqil, and Iyās—the sons of al-Bukayr, also allies of Banū ʿAdī; as well as ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, ally of Banū Makhzūm; and Suhayb ibn Sinān al-Namari, ally of Banū Tamīm.
Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Wāqidī said: al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn ʿUthmān narrated to me from Makhramah ibn Sulaymān al-Walabī, from Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn Ṭalḥah, who said: Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allah related:
“I was present at the marketplace of Busra when a monk in his cell called out, ‘Ask the pilgrims: is there anyone among them from the Sacred Precinct?’ I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ He asked, ‘Has Aḥmad appeared yet?’ I said, ‘Who is Aḥmad?’ He replied, ‘The son of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. This is the month in which he will emerge; he is the last of the prophets. His place of emergence is the ḥaram and his migration will be to a land of palm-trees, lava fields, and salt-flats. See that no one reaches him before you do.’
“It lodged in my heart, so I hastened back to Mecca and asked, ‘Is there any news?’ They said, ‘Yes—Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah, the Trustworthy, has claimed prophethood, and Ibn Abī Quḥāfah has followed him.’ I went in to Abū Bakr and asked, ‘Have you followed this man?’ He said, ‘Yes; go and follow him yourself.’
“Then I told him what the monk had said. Abū Bakr took me until we came to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—whereupon I accepted Islam and informed the Prophet of the monk’s words. When Abū Bakr and I had embraced Islam, Naufal ibn Khuwaylid al-ʿAdawiyyah seized us, tied us together with a single rope, and the clan of Taym did not stop him. Naufal used to be called ‘the Lion of Quraysh,’ and because of that Abū Bakr and I came to be known as al-Qarīnayn (the two companions bound together).”
Ismāʿīl ibn Mujālid narrated from Bayān ibn Bishr, from Wabrah, from Hammām, who said: I heard ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir say, “I saw the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—when he had with him only five slaves, two women, and Abū Bakr.” Al-Bukhārī recorded this report.
