and the Messenger of Allah would say, “Allah continues to strengthen Ḥassān with the Holy Spirit so long as he defends the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī. (1)
Mujālid narrated—from ʿĀmir, from Jābir—that when the Day of the Confederates occurred, the Prophet ﷺ asked, “Who will safeguard the Muslims’ honour?” Kaʿb ibn Mālik said, “I will.” Ibn Rawāḥah said, “I will.” Ḥassān said, “I will.” He replied, “Yes—lampoon them, and the Holy Spirit will assist you against them. (2)”
ʿUrwah related: “I once reviled Ibn Furayʿah in the presence of ʿĀʾishah, and she said, ‘My nephew, I adjure you to desist, for he used to defend the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. (3)’”
ʿUmar ibn Ḥawshab reported—through ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, who heard him say—that Ḥassān entered upon ʿĀʾishah after he had gone blind. She set a cushion for him, whereupon her brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came in and said, “You seat him on a cushion after what he said?”—alluding to his words during the incident of the slander. She answered, “He used to reply on behalf of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and soothe his heart against his enemies; he is now blind, and I hope he will not be punished in the Hereafter. (4)”
It is also reported from ʿĀʾishah that she said, “When the Messenger of Allah arrived in Medina, Quraysh lampooned him and, along with him, the Anṣār. He therefore said to Ḥassān, ‘Satirize them, for I fear they might strike at me through insults aimed at my kinsfolk.’”
