Ibn Isḥāq said: “I asked Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥassān, ‘How old was Ḥassān at the time of the Hijrah?’ He replied, ‘Sixty years old, whereas the Messenger of Allah emigrated when he was fifty-three.’
Al-Zuhrī, on the authority of Ibn al-Musayyab, related:
“Ḥassān was sitting in a circle in which Abū Hurayrah was present. He said, ‘I adjure you by Allah, O Abū Hurayrah! Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Respond on my behalf—may Allah support you with the Holy Spirit”?’ He answered, ‘By Allah, yes.’ (1)
ʿAdī ibn Thābit narrated, on the authority of al-Barāʾ, that the Messenger of Allah said to Ḥassān: ‘Satirize them, confront them, and Gabriel is with you. (2)’
Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab said: ‘ʿUmar once passed by Ḥassān while he was reciting poetry in the mosque and glared at him. Ḥassān said, “I used to recite here while one better than you was present.” ʿUmar replied, “You have spoken the truth.” (3)’
Ibn Abī al-Zinād narrated—through his father, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah—that she said: ‘The Prophet ﷺ would have a small pulpit set up for Ḥassān in the mosque; he would stand on it, defending the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’
